A rare mineral...

Dear All

What an amazing Flat season we have enjoyed so far this year. At Royal Ascot, which ended yesterday there were no end of extraordinary performances and stories to warm the cockles of your hearts...

Canford Cliffs, Frankel, Fame And Glory, Brown Panther, Maybe, Await The Dawn, Nathaniel, Frederick Engels, Bapak Chinta, Immortal Verse, Rewilding, Power etc etc.and these are just race winners. There were countless other top class performances. Sensational stuff and we made a few quid also...

My two main systems for picking winners both performed admirably and I will continue to track qualifiers here over the next few months. I will also be looking to add to our portfolio of systems...

I was most impressed with the way Maybe won yesterday's Chesham Stakes - doubts about the going and sweating beforehand hinted at concern and was reflected in the market as Maybe drifted alarmingly. The system I use to identify juvenile winners pointed so strongly towards Maybe and with the collateral support of the breeding through her sire Galileo it was a maximum bet for me. Power also looked really mature and if ever a name suited a horse's demeanour it was this one. Both look real Guineas prospects for next year and, although it's very early days and the prices are ridiculously short, I am tempted. I think I shall resist.

I will submit a list of those to follow from Royal Ascot. It was going to be a list of beaten horses but I suspect it will now be two lists; one of winners and one of beaten ones.

On today, I have two for the money:

Dhaamer in the 3:40 and Vulcanite in the 4:10 at Pontefract; both from my Alerts List though neither are system qualifiers. Vulcanite is a very interesting contender A run of 4 victories (the best at Class 2) for this progressive individual was interrupted by defeat (8th) but and its a big but!) it was in the the G1 Prix Royal-Oak (French St Leger); quite a step up...
Jim Crowley has travelled up to South Yorkshire to ride for his guv'nor Mr Beckett, a stable I like - very much on the up - and I have gone in here...

Just had a text from my daughter during the Round Tom race; distracted me; stopped watching and failed to press the lay button when it was obvious the petrol was running out. Should have realised: A French-bred over three and a quarter miles; didn't see another horse for three miles and one furlong then failed to see the trip out so certain non-stayer. Over a shorter trip will be some bet next time.

Happy punting!

Cheerio.

Power Tuesday... Mac's Power today!

Dear All

Some thoughts about today's cards...

Red Duke will win the 2:15 at Redcar; the stable are very enthusiastic. Even at odds-on (thought not my bag) is probably good value...

At Ascot the rain causes us all manner of problems; many won't of encountered such ground before; even fewer run well on it!

I cannot see past Coolmore's Maybe in 2:30. His first time out rating and his breeding identifies him him head and shoulders above the rest with Ford Bastion chasing him home. The Godolphin horse's breeding concerns on this ground.

I want to take on Await The Dawn in the 3:05. Drunken Sailor and Poet appeal as likely stayers in the ground. ATD is a lay for me.

In the sprint championship at 3:45, Roger Varian sounds doubtful that Elzaam will even run. I like him. The Aussie must have a chance in view of the paucity of the opposition especially coming from The Kings Stand staying on well (good record recently for those running in both races)
Definightly will love the ground; the Master of Beckhampton gave it a good word...

The Wokingham (4:25) - Pastoral Player will be a good result for me in an Ante Post Yankee but I really like Mac's Power - entered in the Golden Jubilee, well drawn; trainer knows how to get these ready and placed last time out but sparingly raced this season. A must!

The Duke of Edinburgh at 5:00. I want to say Modun - the ubiquitous statement Group horse masquerading as a handicapper was muttered in spades after his Newbury win. Couple of negatives as well as being quite short. BetFred is standing him and breeding speaks against the ground being a plus. Taqleed is highly thought of by the Gosden yard (5 winners yesterday) and I think he might be the one here.

In the last double your Maximum Bet and get on Dahia. Olivier Peslier does not have his plane ticket scheduled until after the last race; rode the horse last time in France for Lydia Pearce winning on heavy ground at St. Cloud. Has run in the right races and I am very keen on its chances. Elyaadi has too many question marks especially on the ground.

Happy punting!

Follow the aristocracy....

Dear All...

Whatever you do, please do not miss Western Aristocracy in the Jersey Stakes (2:30 at Royal Ascot). What's to like..?

At all the big meetings, last time out winners hold the key! Only Codemaster possesses that statistic in this contest.

He is unbeaten in two starts; two of the last three winners of this race had run only twice and so shared a similar profile; nevertheless totally unexposed.

Both contests won over 7 furlongs - a specialist distance. He doesn't carry a penalty; avoid penalised horses like the plague.

Trained by Jeremy Noseda - won this race twice in past 10 years - Proclamation, who went on to better things, and Just James.

Ridden by J Murtagh - how often does Noseda put up Dettori or Murtagh when he has a live one...

The price - 13/2 (VC Bet - BOG) is enticing.

On my Hot List - always a positive for me.

Get on and fill your boots! Very confident selection.

Have winners will travel...

Dear All...

Has to be significant that McCoy has travelled the lengthy journey to beautiful Northumberland for one ride in the opener at Hexham on Rachel Hobbs's Ely Brown...

Time to lay Fame and Glory now if you have backed it for the Ascot Gold Cup at 3/1 or bigger. Read Donn McClean's blog to see why; a compelling argument! He knows what he is talking about.

Today's qualifiers:

Rio's Rosanna - 2:15 Chester
Choral - 8:30 Leicester

Nothing much to report with regard to Tote Ten To Follow - last week's Classics didn't work out for many with all 3 winners non-participants. I have drifted down the leaderboard a little but expecting to win the Queen Anne, St James's Palace Stakes and be competitive in the Prince of Wales's Stakes with Planteur...

Let me add my hearty congratulations to Sir Henry. I am not a fan of the honours system but if it must be then Henry is my idea of a deserving recipient... he was one of the principal reasons why, as a boy, I was enthralled by this game. Those beautifully bred thoroughbreds in the silks of wealthy and powerful individuals was a potent cocktail then...

I introduced myself to Henry at Windsor races one evening. He looked tired and a bit drawn and was strangely isolated outside the paddock on a quiet Monday. He seemed genuinely surprised that I requested he autograph my race programme; humble and self effacing for one of such privilege and charming towards all in both victory and defeat. A genuine hero!

Long live Sir Henry Cecil!

That's all folks!

A real gem...

Dear All

Jamie Moore has come down to Ffos Las for one ride; drifting and ratings wise a bit to find but I am going in...

Quel Moi?

Dear All...

Really put myself away with Pour Moi in Saturday's Derby; nevertheless not sure how good this Derby was...time will tell, of course! The runners seem to be ever more green and inexperienced; hence we have seen such decisive and fancied winners in recent years with so many not tready for the rigours of the race or for Epsom's challenge...

I still have high hopes for Carlton House; the tactical speed he showed off Tattenham Corner suggests that 10 furlongs might be his optimum trip though the race was probably inconclusive overall in view of the scrimmaging and lost shoe etc.

Barzalona's celebrations, although more welcome than the team of the similar name's the previous weekend (MUFC supporter), were unacceptable whilst at the same time welcome publicity for this great sport! The new Frankie me thinks in more ways than one!

Racing was tricky yesterday because of the change in the weather in some venues so opportunities were few and far between; we saw a useful juvenile from the Margarson yard - connections did well to keep it so quiet as the trainer spoke of Royal Ascot as though it was most certainly the plan. The one seed of doubt is yesterday's close proximity to the intended reappearance in the Coventry next Tuesday...

Today's qualifiers are;

SET ME FREE - 16:45 Redcar
SPANISH BOUNTY - 15:20 Salisbury
EMILIO LARGO - 15:55 Salisbury

None are A grade qualifiers though so suggest stakes kept to a minimum - perhaps an each way trixie or treble...

Bye for now!

Will we Fathom It?

Dear All

I think Caspar might have won on a different day; not sure he was unlucky just circumstances dictated against him on this tricky configuration...

Premio Loco was the only horse that I was interested in the Diomed but was too short; no previous at Epsom; had not won in any of past 5 starts - want a much bigger price in a competitive race like that...

Backed Fathom Five in the Dash; well drawn; right yard; son up; apparently looks great in the paddock. Get on!

Bye for now!

Caspar ghosts in...

Dear All...

Me again...

Trojan unlucky - lovely ride by Ahern...

Like Caspar Netscher in next... Murtagh for a small yard. Perfect! Haven't backed it yet though and might not!

See you soon...

The Trojan Horse...

Dear All

Backed Trojan Nights each way in the first at Epsom, Use Bet365 to take advantage of 4/1 tv race offer...

Haggas is a good man in handicaps and Ahern, a top jock... big word for the Boogie Shoes though! Malthouse being backed.

Catch you later...

Dancing in the Rain...

Dear All

I do hope you all followed the advice to back Dancing Rain for the Oaks. For those of you yet to see the light, please, please, please log on to Nick Mordin. he really is a genius!

The odds were stupendous as well. I backed Ante Post so didn't get the benefit of the Best Odds Guaranteed. It is essential that you take these opportunities into account.

Johnny Murtagh gave the William Haggas trained filly a canny ride switching the tempo but clearly many of the other jockeys thought they would pick up Johnny and became too detached...

I have an interest in the Derby today; having backed Carlton House at 23 many moons ago. Regrettably, laid before the Dante figuring it was an open contest and a heavy defeat by Seville or World Domination or both would scupper me. So played the safe card! Hit form since then with my wagering so perhaps would have been braver now...definite lay material today though if you are on at bigger prices after the recent setback.

Confidence behind Pour Moi appears to have levelled off - can't have that one on my mind - Carlton House and Recital will either battle out the finish or one of them will win comfortably; followed home by at least two of the other O'Brien's including Seville and probably one other though not sure which yet...

Bit behind this morning so yet to establish today's qualifiers but will endeavour (Inspector Morse's christian name you know!) to post a list, if there are any, later.

Surreal! But have been twittering with Clare Balding recently. Sounds a great lady!

Bye for now.
